Anxiety Induced Refractory Gastrointestinal Disorders

چکیده
Functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorders are clinical syndromes characterized by chronic or relapsing GI symptoms in the absence of structural or biochemical abnormalities that can be identified following a standard diagnostic work-up. The irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and functional dyspepsia (FD) are the best recognized functional bowel disorders and both these disorders are highly prevalent. FD is a very common clinical condition affecting one-third of the population. Neurotransmitters produced in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract regulate GI motility, blood flow, secretion and absorption. The enteric nervous system and central nervous system have direct effects on each other. The brain-gut connection (axis) seems to be a mechanism that links the psycho emotional state with GI dysfunction. In the majority of FD patients, treatment is symptom based (Figure 1). Depending on the most dominant symptom, acid inhibitory or prokinetic compounds are given but the results remain often unsatisfactory. There remains a substantial group of patients that do not respond to therapy. It is believed that psychosocial factors and abnormalities of gut function play a role in the manifestation and severity of symptoms [1-3]. GERD and its refractoriness to PPI treatment

Gastrointestinal (Digestive) disorders, as one of the most frequent physical complaints in the human population, are a well-known example of the association of anxiety with physical health. It is estimated that about 7 to 12 percent of all referrals to physicians are due to digestive disorders and symptoms. Mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) as an immunosuppressive agent is used to prevent graft rejection. One of the adverse effects of long time administration of MMF is the gastrointestinal disorder. This study aimed to investigate the gastroprotective effect of silymarin (SMN) on MMF-induced gastrointestinal (GI) disorders. Twenty-four adult female Wistar rats were assigned into three groups including t...
متن کاملVagus Nerve as Modulator of the Brain–Gut Axis in Psychiatric and Inflammatory Disorders
The vagus nerve represents the main component of the parasympathetic nervous system, which oversees a vast array of crucial bodily functions, including control of mood, immune response, digestion, and heart rate. It establishes one of the connections between the brain and the gastrointestinal tract and sends information about the state of the inner organs to the brain via afferent fibers. In th...
